Strasbourg Christmas Market

One of the oldest Christmas markets in Europe

The origins of the Strasbourg Christmas Market can be traced back to the Middle Ages. At that time, Strasbourg was a free imperial city in the Holy Roman Empire. The Christmas Market was held on the 6th December and was known as the Klausenmärik – the Saint Nicholas’ Market. In 1570, as a result of the Reformation, which attempted to put an end to many Catholic traditions including the veneration of the Saints, the Christmas Market was renamed as the Christkindelsmärik – the Christ Child Market. This market was held on the 3 days before Christmas in the square in front of the Cathedral.

Today, Strasbourg Christmas Market starts on the first weekend of Advent and ends on the evening of the 24th December. The market is scattered across the large squares in the historical centre of Strasbourg – Place de la Cathédrale, Place Gutenberg, Place Kléber, Place Broglie, etc. There are almost 300 chalets in total and each year the market welcomes 2 million visitors from around the world.

The Wonder of Christmas in Alsace

As the Christmas celebrations draw near, the city is transformed and completely taken over by the magic of Christmas. The lights, festive decorations, nativity scenes, shows, mulled wine, pretzels and gingerbread create an incomparable atmosphere, turning Strasbourg into the Christmas Capital of Europe.

The 30-metre Great Christmas Tree has stood proudly on Place Kléber since 1605, as a true symbol of Strasbourg’s prestige at this time of year. At its foot lies the Village of Sharing, testimony to the values of altruism and solidarity which have shaped the identity of Strasbourg throughout the centuries.

The city of Strasbourg also opens its arms to Europe, an attitude which is reflected by a dedication to a new country each year. At the foot of the statue of Johannes Gutenberg, in the eponymous square, stand the huts which will this year sport the colours of Portugal.

History, cuisine, traditions and culture. The perfect alchemy for your Christmas celebrations in Strasbourg!
