Ready for Europe! A Europe ready for us?


"European democracy" in question

At the end of January, Ciarus played host to a number of young Germans on a quest...
 

     These high school students came from three different schools: Fritzlar, Marburg and Fulda. They had volunteered to take part in the seminar organised by the Bonifatiushaus and sponsored by the Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung (these institutions work to promote democracy and political education).

     The theme of Europe was studied in its various forms, with one particular question in their sights: How is European democracy constructed? Does it work for the people who will be the Europe of tomorrow?
In order to explore how the European institutions function, the participants visited the European Parliament. At the Council of Europe, they met a number of politicians and, at Ciarus, they spent some time discussing their experiences and thoughts.
     Historic issues were included in the programme (with the visit to the military cemetery of Bergheim).
     After a week of intensive work, these young people left again, taking with them the knowledge they had acquired during their trip, with the job of passing it on to the students who had stayed behind in Germany; a multitude of new experiences, encounters, and sugar-coated memories of the pancake evening at Ciarus...
