build me the house of human rights
This was the theme of the competition organised by the Council of Europe and the association "Regards d'Enfants", in which the pupils of the Over Betuwe College Junior from the Netherlands took part along with 340 other European children.
We were not surprised to learn that they had won the prize for the most original house. This achievement brought together the pupils from four classes and their teachers of history, Dutch and art.
The young people were fully committed to the project, they are the people we can see in the photos, small cut-out characters staged to represent these rights. They are well aware that they have a role to play in this world and its future. Each room in their house contains a human right: the right to freedom, well-being, non-discrimination... As if they're trying to say: if you want to come in, you'll have to respect them.
Respect: a phrase put forward by Tomi Ungerer: "The most important of words is RESPECT. Without it, there's no peace. Respect for religions, parents, other people, water, work, food." The Alsatian artist was actually present on 29 March during the inauguration of the model exhibition in Wacken.
The models of the houses of human rights will then tour Europe and will be presented at the UN in Geneva and at UNESCO in Paris…
